被美國《財星》（Fortune）雜誌譽為20世紀四大投資巨人之一、與股神巴菲特齊名的「指數型基金之父」約翰．柏格（John C. Bogle），於本週三（2019年1月16日）因癌症逝世於美國家中，享壽89歲。
約翰．柏格於1974年創立領航集團（Vanguard Group），推出世界上第一檔指數型基金，開啟投資「一籃子股票」的先河。
股神巴菲特稱約翰．柏格為「英雄」，在2016年給股東的信上，巴菲特寫道，「他早年在投資理財產業經常被嘲笑，時至今日，無論如何，他可以很滿足地意識到，如果沒有他的幫助，數百萬投資者不會享有現在這樣優越的報酬率；他是投資人的英雄，也是我的英雄。」

1929年 - 約翰‧柏格於1929年5月8日誕生於美國紐澤西
1947年 - 就讀普林斯頓大學
1951年 - 畢業論文以共同基金為研究主題, 深受威靈頓基金創辦人摩根高度賞識而進入該公司
1973年 - 美股步入空頭，連續兩年下跌，威靈頓管理公司與波士頓合作夥伴內訌
1974年 - 創立 Vanguard 先鋒集團 (或叫領航集團, 先鋒（Vanguand）之名源自於18世紀末，與拿破崙作戰的英國海將納爾遜（Horatio Nelson）。納爾遜秉持著過人的英勇及智慧，面對橫掃整個歐陸的法國軍隊，仍能出奇制勝，而當時使用的戰艦名稱就是先鋒號（HMS Vanguard）
1975年 - 先鋒集團開始運作，年底推出世界第一檔指數型基金,也就是ETF的前身
1977年 - 先鋒集團推出免手續費的基金制度，大幅降低投資人的成本
1981年 - 美國證監會正式批准指數型金的投資信託型態成立
1996年 - 辭去先鋒集團總裁暨執行長, 轉為資深總裁
1999年 - 被財星雜誌選為投資界4大 "20世紀巨人" 之一
2000年 - 辭任先鋒集團資深總裁，退休後成立伯格財務市場研究中心
2004年 - 被《時代》雜誌選為世上最具影響力100人之一;獲頒美園投資者協會終身成就奬
2010年 - 先鋒集團躍居全美資產規模最大的基金公司
